We just watched the broadcast for children and youth, which explained that we need to allow our children to learn and receive instruction by the Spirit what they need to do, when and how they need to do it. I felt as though 90% of my body and spirit were excited about the prospect, but 10% was scared and screaming. Whether you have children or not, for most there is an innate desire to help children and youth be better and to succeed because it is what we would want for ourselves. But with so many opportunities for failure, how do you stop and allow them to receive their own instruction?
A Lifelong Process
Feeling the promptings of the spirit and learning to follow them is a lifelong process. This is one that I am still working on. Then the doubt creeps in asking, “How will my kids do it and do it well? I was just reading a quote by Joseph Smith that said, “The devil may appear as an angel of light.” Yikes! Suddenly, I felt scared and worried that I might fail. But it is also taught that we have the gift of the Holy Ghost and the gifts of the Spirit in order to about Satan’s deception (D&C 46).
Sometimes when I am reading through the scriptures, I stop and wonder why the Lord doesn’t speak to me the way he sometimes speaks to others.
I tend to read the first of the Book of Mormon more than the rest, so Lehi and Nephi are right up front for me in their examples of receiving inspiration from the Lord. Lehi had many dreams. He had a dream about his worth and his family. He had a dream telling him to leave Jerusalem. Lehi dreamed that Nephi and his brothers should go back and get the plates. He was given instruction through his children and through the Liahona. The Lord spoke to him and said that Nephi and his brothers should go back and find wives. Nephi in turn had many of the visions his father had.
It got me thinking how does He speak to me most often? Thus far, it has not been through dreams and visions. As much as I think I would like and want those forms of communication, it probably would not make life any easier for me.
How does He speak to you? A small amount of reflection and you should be able to come up with a few answers. If you’re not sure, I know Elder Scott gave a pretty good talk that discussed recording impressions.
Then the question hit me: If I know that is how He speaks to me, do I TRUST and ACT when I get inspiration through those avenues?
Trust and Act
I know responding is definitely an area I could get much better at. Sometimes I will have the same thought multiple times and I can picture myself repeating the kid’s name over and over with greater intensity, telling them to pay attention.
Here’s something that stands out to me about Lehi though: for Lehi to tell his family things that had such dramatic impact, and for those obedient to seem so willing to comply, they had to understand something really important. They had to know how their father received inspiration. There were those in the family who remained hard-hearted, but those that remained faithful had a testimony of how their father received inspiration.
And I believe that is what our Prophet and leaders are trying to teach us. We have to know how we receive inspiration. We learn that by reading, praying, asking for guidance, and acting on our thoughts/feelings. Sometimes we will mess up..so we start again. It’s a lifelong process. One that our children and us need to be working at daily. The war for us rages on.
If our protection is the Holy Ghost, we need to learn how He speaks to us.
How do you receive instruction?
